Writing a literature review is one of those university tasks that sounds easier than it actually is. You find a few journal articles, explain what each researcher said, add references and assume the job is done.
That is usually where the problems begin.
A strong literature review is not a catalogue of sources. It is a reasoned discussion of what researchers have discovered, where their findings agree or conflict, how reliable the evidence is and what still needs to be understood. University guidance consistently emphasises this distinction: effective reviews require analysis, comparison, synthesis and evaluation rather than simple description.
In this guide, I will walk you through the process I would use to tackle a literature review for a university assignment, from understanding the question to editing the final draft.
What is a literature review?
A literature review examines published research and academic writing on a particular subject.
The aim is to give your reader a clear picture of the existing knowledge surrounding your topic. That means selecting useful sources, identifying important themes and debates, comparing different findings and assessing the strengths and weaknesses of the evidence.
It is worth separating a literature review from an annotated bibliography.
An annotated bibliography usually deals with sources one at a time. You might describe an article, explain its main argument and comment on its usefulness before moving to the next source.
A literature review works differently. The sources need to interact with one another.
For example, instead of writing:
Smith (2023) found that online learning improved student engagement. Jones (2024) found that students preferred face-to-face teaching. Khan (2025) found mixed results.
You could write:
Research into online learning has produced mixed conclusions. Smith (2023) associates online teaching with greater student engagement, whereas Jones (2024) reports a preference for face-to-face learning. Khan (2025) offers a more nuanced finding, suggesting that the effectiveness of online learning may depend on factors such as course design and student circumstances.
The second version gives the reader something to think about. It compares the studies instead of simply reporting them.
Start with the assignment question
Before searching for articles, I would spend time understanding exactly what the assignment is asking you to investigate.
Look at the command words in the question.
“Describe” usually requires explanation. “Compare” asks you to identify similarities and differences. “Critically evaluate” requires you to judge the evidence and arguments. “To what extent” normally requires you to weigh competing evidence before reaching a conclusion.
This matters because a broad topic can produce an enormous amount of literature.
Imagine your assignment asks:
“To what extent does social media influence university students’ academic performance?”
You could potentially research social media, education, psychology, communication, concentration, sleep, student wellbeing and hundreds of related subjects.
You do not need all of that.
Instead, identify the parts of the question that determine your scope. You might decide to focus on social-media use, measurable academic performance and university students, while treating other issues only where they help explain the relationship.
A focused review is generally more useful than one that tries to cover everything remotely connected to the subject. University guidance likewise recommends establishing boundaries and concentrating on literature that directly contributes to the research question.
Build a search strategy
Once you know what you are looking for, turn the question into search terms.
Don’t rely on one phrase. Academic researchers may use different terminology for the same concept.
For example, if your topic concerns social media and academic performance, your search terms might include:
- social media
- social networking
- social networking sites
- university students
- higher education students
- academic achievement
- academic performance
- educational outcomes
- student attainment
You can combine related terms using Boolean operators.
For example:
("social media" OR "social networking") AND ("academic performance" OR "academic achievement") AND ("university students" OR undergraduates)
This approach gives you more control over your searches and reduces the chance of missing relevant research simply because an author used different terminology.
Find sources that are actually worth using
The quality of your literature review depends heavily on the quality of your sources.
I would begin with your university library and recognised academic databases, then use Google Scholar as another discovery tool. Google Scholar searches scholarly literature across articles, books, theses, conference papers and other academic material, but a search result is not automatically a recommendation that the source belongs in your assignment.
When you find a promising paper, check the details.
Ask yourself:
- Who wrote it?
- Where was it published?
- Is it peer reviewed?
- How recent is it?
- What research method was used?
- Does the sample actually represent the population being discussed?
- Are the conclusions supported by the evidence?
- Does another study reach a different conclusion?
This last question is particularly important.
If five papers agree with one another, you need to know why. If they disagree, you need to understand the reasons for the disagreement.
The University of Connecticut’s literature-review guidance recommends paying attention to authorship, methodology, conflicting findings, assumptions and changes in theories over time.
Keep a literature matrix
One practical technique can save you a surprising amount of time later: keep a literature matrix while you read.
It can be as simple as a spreadsheet.
Useful columns include:

You can add columns for publication year, DOI, citation details or particularly useful quotations.
The University of Sheffield specifically recommends using a literature matrix to organise sources and identify themes, while noting that you can adapt the columns to suit your project.
The real benefit becomes apparent when you start writing. Instead of opening twenty browser tabs and trying to remember which article said what, you have already organised the information.
Look for themes instead of collecting endless papers
At some point, stop searching and look at what you have found.
What ideas keep appearing?
Where do researchers agree?
Where do they disagree?
Are different conclusions associated with different research methods?
Has the topic changed over time?
Are certain groups, contexts or variables missing from the research?
These questions help you identify the themes that will eventually form the structure of your review.

You could examine evidence concerning personalised feedback, accessibility and learning support.
Academic and ethical concerns
You might then discuss assessment integrity, over-reliance on AI and concerns about authorship.
Differences between student groups
Another section could examine whether the effects vary according to students’ digital skills, discipline or level of study.
Gaps in current research
Finally, you could consider areas where existing evidence remains limited or contradictory.
This thematic approach is usually much stronger than writing one section called “Smith”, another called “Jones” and another called “Ahmed”.
Learn to synthesise sources
This is probably the biggest difference between an average literature review and a strong one.
Synthesis means bringing sources together to make a broader point.
Suppose three studies investigate whether working from home affects productivity. One reports higher productivity, another reports lower productivity and the third finds no meaningful difference.
Don’t simply summarise all three.
Ask why their findings differ.
Perhaps one study examined technology workers while another focused on customer-service employees. Perhaps one measured productivity through self-reported questionnaires while another used employer performance data.
That gives you an analytical paragraph:
Evidence concerning the effect of remote working on productivity remains inconsistent. While some studies report improvements in individual output, others identify lower performance or no significant change. These differences may partly reflect variations in occupation, management practices and the way productivity is measured, meaning that broad claims about remote working should be treated cautiously.
Notice what this does not do. It does not pretend that one researcher is automatically correct.
Instead, it explains the relationship between the evidence.
That is literature synthesis, and it is central to effective academic review writing.
Evaluate the evidence, don’t just criticise it
“Critical analysis” does not mean finding something negative to say about every source.
It means asking whether the evidence is strong enough to support the conclusions being drawn.
Consider a hypothetical study claiming that social-media use reduces academic performance. Before accepting that conclusion, you might ask:
- How many students participated?
- Were they from one university or several?
- Was social-media use measured objectively or estimated by participants?
- Was academic performance measured using grades?
- Was the research longitudinal or based on one point in time?
- Could another factor explain the relationship?
- Does the study demonstrate causation or merely correlation?
That final distinction is particularly important.
If researchers find that students who spend more time on social media tend to achieve lower grades, that does not automatically prove that social media caused the lower grades.
Perhaps students who are already struggling academically spend more time online.
Your writing should reflect that level of caution.
Useful academic language includes:
- “the findings suggest…”
- “the evidence indicates…”
- “this may be explained by…”
- “the study is limited by…”
- “these findings contrast with…”
- “the evidence remains inconclusive…”
You are not weakening your argument by acknowledging uncertainty. In many cases, you are making it more credible.
Choose a structure that suits your topic
There is no universal structure for every literature review.
Thematic structure
This is often the easiest option for a standard assignment.
You group sources according to ideas, issues or debates.
For example:
- Background and key concepts
- Arguments supporting the main position
- Arguments challenging it
- Factors explaining different findings
- Remaining gaps and limitations
Chronological structure
Use this when the development of research over time matters.
You might explain how early researchers approached the subject, how later evidence challenged those assumptions and what researchers currently understand.
Methodological structure
This works when different methods have produced notably different findings.
You might compare experimental, qualitative, survey-based and longitudinal research.
Don’t choose a structure simply because it looks academic. Choose the one that makes the evidence easiest for your reader to understand.
Write the review around an argument
Once you have identified your themes, create an outline before writing full paragraphs.
A typical assignment literature review might contain:
Introduction
Explain the topic, define essential terms, establish the scope and tell the reader what the review will examine.
Main discussion
Organise the evidence around your major themes. Compare sources, evaluate methods and explain disagreements.
Research gaps or unresolved issues
Identify what remains uncertain or insufficiently explored.
Conclusion
Bring the main findings together and explain what the literature tells us overall.
The conclusion should not introduce a completely new source or argument. It should answer the bigger question created by your review.
Write paragraphs that do real work
A useful paragraph often starts with a clear point.
You then introduce evidence, compare it with other research and explain why the comparison matters.
For example:
Several studies associate greater student autonomy with improved engagement in online learning. However, the evidence is not consistent across educational settings. Research based on self-reported engagement may also produce different results from studies using attendance, assessment or completion data. This suggests that the apparent benefits of autonomy may depend partly on how engagement is defined and measured.
The paragraph is doing more than reporting three sources. It makes an argument about the evidence.
That is what you want throughout the review.
Don’t confuse a literature review with a systematic review
This distinction is easy to overlook.
A normal literature review for an assignment may involve a carefully planned search and critical discussion of relevant studies. A systematic review follows a much more formal process for identifying, selecting, assessing and synthesising evidence.
If your assignment specifically asks you to conduct a systematic review, you will need to follow the methodology required by your discipline. PRISMA 2020 is a major reporting guideline for systematic reviews and provides a 27-item checklist alongside flow diagrams and expanded guidance.
But don’t automatically turn a 1,500-word assignment into a miniature systematic-review project. Follow the requirements in your module handbook and assessment brief.
Common mistakes that weaken literature reviews
A few problems appear again and again.
Writing one paragraph per source
This creates a sequence of summaries rather than a connected argument.
Using sources because they contain the right keywords
A source can mention your topic without providing useful evidence for your particular question.
Using too many quotations
Your literature review should demonstrate your understanding of the research. Paraphrasing and synthesis are normally more useful than filling the page with quotations.
Ignoring contradictory evidence
If credible researchers disagree, don’t hide the disagreement. Explain it.
Making an exaggerated claim about a research gap
You rarely need to claim that “no research exists”. A more defensible argument might be that evidence remains limited in a particular population, context or methodological area.
Forgetting the assignment question
This is perhaps the easiest mistake to make. You can become so interested in the literature that you forget why you were reading it.
Keep the original question visible while you write.
A practical final check
Before submitting, I would read the review once specifically for argument rather than grammar.
Ask yourself:
- Does every section contribute to the assignment question?
- Have I compared sources rather than simply listed them?
- Have I explained important disagreements?
- Have I evaluated significant evidence?
- Are my sources credible and relevant?
- Have I distinguished correlation from causation where necessary?
- Does the conclusion reflect the evidence discussed?
- Is every borrowed idea properly referenced?
- Is my reference list consistent with the required style?
Then do a separate proofreading pass.

Final thoughts
The best way to approach a literature review is to stop thinking of it as a collection of articles.
Think of it as a conversation.
Each source contributes something. Some researchers support one another. Others disagree. Some use stronger methods than others. Some answer part of your question while leaving another part unresolved.
Your job is to make sense of that conversation.
Start with a focused assignment question. Search deliberately, keep a record of what you find and organise your notes by themes. Then write around the relationships between studies rather than around individual authors.
